GEORGETOWN - PENANG
MALAYSIA
Located in the southern part of the Malaysian peninsula and the capital of Penang state, Georgetown is the third most populous city and has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage since 2008. It was founded in the late 18th century by the British East India Company, and became an important trading port for the region. During the 19th century, Georgetown attracted a large number of Chinese, Indian, and Arab immigrants, who brought with them their own cultural traditions and religions. This resulted in a rich cultural melting pot, which can still be seen today in the city's diverse architecture, street art, and cuisine. Penang is also known as "The Pearl of the Orient"!
"Georgetown is a unique blend of East and West, where colonial heritage meets Asian culture, creating a city that is rich in history and character." - Unknown.
I have visited this town number of times and there are two things that I enjoyed the most: the street foods and the old architecture buildings which were heavily influenced by the Colonials, Chinese, and Malay. There are even terms to describe the merged of that three styles: "Peranakan". The colorful street art, delicious street food and rich cultural heritage are very interesting. Strolling through the streets, the historical influences from colonial rule, with elegant British-style architecture sitting alongside traditional Chinese shop houses. The hawker stalls offered an abundance of flavorful dishes, including the famous Char Kway Teow and Asam. LaksaEnjoy!
Thank you for traveling with me!
This is part of my ongoing travel visual clips, where I share a glimpse of my travel visuals and thoughts. Each series features a paragraph about the history of the place, followed by a paragraph describing my thoughts while exploring that place. Accompanied by no more than fifteen carefully curated images that I took, each series is intended to give you the umami of travel. - Julius Yls
